Creating Your Fictional Setting

The Great American Flying Broomstick

How’s your novel coming along? A sense of place is critical to drawing in the reader.

Join fantasy writer Dave Casler in a two-session, hands-on workshop in which participants explore how to create just the right setting for your story. In the first session, Dave will guide  workshop participants through a series of fun exercises to explore all the continuity issues that apply to your fictional world, fantasy or otherwise. Does your world have horses? Then it needs stables, hay, tack, pasture, and so on, not to mention characters who know how to ride! We’ll discuss how to develop a sense of authenticity as a backdrop for your novel. Knowing your setting well helps you put your characters in context. In the week between the first and second session, participants will create their own fictional worlds and explore how their own characters interact with it. The second session will be entirely workshop in which we will share our worlds with each other in a low-key, positive way.

Dave Casler, a Ridgway resident, is the author of The Story of the Great American Flying Broomstick series and has just released a new fantasy novel, The Unexpected Traveler, on Amazon Kindle.
