The Changing Paradigms of Federal Land Management — Dave Roberts and Glenda Cowles

Join us to explore local, state, national, and international issues.  This group seeks to understand varied perspectives and examine new ideas for problem solving.  Everyone with an interest in such matters and a willingness to discuss them in a completely civil manner is invited. The group meets in the Montrose Regional Library Meeting Room from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m on the second Thursday each month, May through January.  Topics are chosen by the group at the April meeting.

The current administration is implementing changes in policies and procedures of the U.S. land management agencies, with consequential impacts on the lands and resources they manage. These changes emphasize altering land use to increase the use of extractive resources, while at the same time putting less emphasis on environmental protections of air, water, and wildlife species. Also included is the administration’s effort to streamline the NEPA environmental review process. Other actions have impacts on our national parks and monuments. For example, two monuments in Utah have had their boundaries redrawn, shrinking Bears Ears National Monument by 85%, and Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument by 50%. We will discuss the pros and cons of these policy and procedural changes, how best to balance environmental protections and multiple uses, and the impacts all this might have on our environment and our future generations.
