Not Too Late to Sign Up for MoWriMo (Montrose Writing Month)

It’s one of those zen-ish paradoxes that sometimes we can write better – come up with better insights or word combinations – when we stop trying so hard. So in January we do a zen-ish paradoxical thing by dedicating ourselves to our writing for a month but not taking it too seriously.

One way we get beyond taking it seriously is by making resolutions that are hard to fulfill unless we keep writing and don’t stop to listen to our Inner Critics. No time for the Inner Critic – gotta keep writing!  On the other hand, you don’t want to make a resolution that will increase your stress to the point of paralysis. The model for MoWriMo is NaNo-WriMo – National Novel Writing Month – where writers aim to write a 50,000-word novel in a month. Good work if you can do it. I’m in awe. But if that is too much or not your genre, you’ll be glad to know that for MoWriMo you get to set your own goal. It can be couched in terms of numbers of words, numbers of pages, numbers of poems, numbers of short stories, or amount of time spent writing.

Here’s how MoWriMo works: 1. Make the resolution. We have pledge forms at the library. You can start anytime before the end of January (the sooner the more time to write) 2. After you fill out your form, get a MoWriMo Rhinoceros. You can put your name or your nom de plume on your MoWriMo Rhino. Or you can decorate it. Place it on the bulletin board, on the Plot Path to Made It Mountain. Your Rhino’s progress tells you and the rest of us how you are getting along. (Public pressure will help push you.) 3. Write! Write wherever works for you.

During the month we’ll have Write-Ins at the library. Get out of the house and away from all the distractions of your normal surroundings. Bring your laptop, or your flash drive to use with a library laptop, and write with other people who are also trying to push their Rhinos toward their goals. We’ll supply quiet, sometimes coffee and tea, and sometimes goodies. Come whenever you can during the hours listed. You don’t have to be there the whole time.  Here’s when you will find us in the meeting room:
