Willa’s pick: “My Antonia” by Willa Cather

My Antonia holds a special place for me because I was named after the author, Willa Cather. She lived an incredible life, but it started with humble beginnings when she moved from Virginia to Nebraska as a young girl. This had a huge impact on her writing, as many of her works are inspired by her own life as a young settler and farmer. “My Antonia” in particular is one of my favorites of her works because of the characters. Even decades later, their dreams and childish antics are still relatable.

Tina’s pick: “Everything Sad is Untrue (a true story)” by Daniel Nayeri

This is an award winning book for middle grade readers about the author’s life in Iran and as a refugee with his family in moving to Oklahoma. The story is three-fold with a blending of ancient folklore, harrowing memories of persecution, and Daniel wanting to be a normal middle school kid adjusting to life in rural America. It is both heartwarming and heart wrenching at the same time.

Laura’s pick: “Maria: A Novel of Maria von Trapp” by Michelle Moran

Discovering “Maria” in the new books section of our library immediately piqued my curiosity as I have long loved “The Sound of Music” and the story of the von Trapp family. Enraged by the inconsistencies in the script for the upcoming Rodgers & Hamnmerstein screenplay, Maria decides she must confront Mr. Hammerstein himself. Hammerstein hands Maria off to his secretary, Fran, and the two strike up a friendship as the true family story begins to unfold. Follow along as Fran realizes that much of the script has been fabricated for Hollywood appeal.

Addy’s pick: “Lunar Boy” by Jes and Cin Wibowo

This is a heartwarming story set in a futuristic world that is brightly inclusive. The coloring for this graphic novel is gorgeous with immersive blues, purples, and pinks that make you sink into a comfort and cozy environment. Save it for a rainy day where you’ll be sure to devour it in one sitting.

Taylor’s pick: “The World of Lore: Dreadful Places” by Aaron Mahnke

I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys ghost tours or urban legends! This book features horror stories, from the USA and the rest of the world, and the real events that inspired them. The stories are short and include many different subgenres of horror.

Becca’s pick: “Throne of Glass” Sarah J Maas

Seven book captivating series. Emotional roller coaster and riveting world building. Plot twists and character building, vivid writing. All in all a series I would want to read for the first time again, several times over.
