The Montrose Regional Library District has always lived within its means. The loss of Ballot measures 6A and 6B in 2025 has created uncertainty in the funding landscape for the District. As a result, the District must begin making difficult choices that balance its mission to serve the community with the cost of providing those services. The MRLD Board of Trustees has made the difficult decision to close the Montrose Regional Library on Saturdays beginning August 1.
“We chose Saturday because it is our least busy day and will be the least impactful to the public, but the savings will help keep our reserves at a stable and responsible level,” said Paul Paladino, Director.
The District has also left some positions unfilled as part of overall belt tightening. Having fewer staff available has made 7-day-a-week coverage more difficult and has made it necessary to close one day a week.
“The board didn’t make this decision lightly and after much discussion and careful consideration, we decided it was in the best interest of the library to be fiscally conservative at this time given the uncertainty of future funding,” said Stephanie Williams, MRLD Board of Trustees President.
